One afternoon, Amy Luskey-Barth returned home to find that her nearly ninety-year-old mother had instructed the gardener to cut off all of the Mexican sage blossoms that had sprung into a glorious purple sea in her back yard. The bundles of purple sage lay lifeless on the ground replaced with hacked, barren stocks. The moment was a heart wrenching and startling epiphany for Amy. In her dementia, Amy’s mother had provided an immediate metaphor for grief, loss, age and wisdom. The image of the purple sage has resonated with Amy since that day and is the name of her journaling workshops. As a Pastoral Counselor, Amy integrates psychology, spirituality and the arts in her guided journaling workshops. Participants need not be experienced writers. The environment is safe, warm, supportive and inviting. The format allows for in-class journaling on a choice of prompts designed to encourage and open the channel for creativity, storytelling and healing. Participants have the opportunity to share their stories from weekly writing assignments.
